1. The compound's exterior: what surrounds this home

Start outside. The exterior decides how much backbone a building has; however good the interior, it has to pass this gate first.

Wide scale (wide satellite · Image 1)

  • About 400 m to the south runs an east–west elevated expressway, with a large interchange to the southwest. This is the strongest source of motion in the whole district; in feng shui terms, noise sha and qi rush: the traffic's noise and air movement press on the south side all day. Buildings near the compound's southern edge take it most directly; the further away, the lighter. The stacked-townhouse cluster that holds Building X sits in the southern half of the compound, so this is the number-one exterior factor for this building.
  • To the east a natural river bends past from north to south, with a wide strip of green between river and compound. Water in the east, curving rather than straight, is the textbook jade belt around the waist: wealth qi with affection, a calm field. It is the compound's biggest exterior asset.
  • Green cover in the area is high and the district as a whole is livable; the commercial complex and towers to the northwest keep their distance and do not press down on the compound.

Mid scale (close satellite · Image 2)

  • The northern half of the compound is three high-rise slab blocks; the southern half is eleven stacked townhouses in staggered rows, with mature planting between them. The townhouse cluster has the towers behind it to the north — backing to the north; to the south lie the compound's own green belt and ring road, and only beyond that the expressway.
  • On the southeast a municipal road curves around the compound, with the compound on the inside of the bend — a jade belt again, which together with the river to the east embraces the east and southeast.
  • The green belt along the compound's southern edge is the townhouses' natural screen against the expressway. That row of trees is worth more in feng shui than in landscaping; do not hope for it to be thinned.

This building (Building X)

  • Building X sits at the northeast corner of the townhouse cluster. The map's building labels place it on the east side of the cluster's northernmost row, right against the high-rise zone to the north.
  • It is the best-placed building in the cluster: the slab towers directly behind it to the north make the most solid backing; to the south there are four rows of townhouses before the compound's edge, and 400 m more before the expressway. Every row in front is a table mountain for it; the noise sha and qi rush have been screened layer by layer before they arrive. To the east, across the compound's green, lie the river and the park: the jade belt sits on its Azure Dragon side.
  • So for Building X the southern expressway needs no extra cure. One thing is enough: keep the south-facing windows (level-1 living room, level-2 balcony) closed during daytime study hours. This year the 5 Yellow and Tai Sui both sit in the south, so no construction and no red decorations on the south side all year — the same instruction as the annual plan in section 6.
  • The river to the east and the road bend to the southeast are Building X's bonus points: the level-2 family room and the son's room are both on the east half, facing the jade belt. That is the exterior basis for the "shared long table, facing east" recommendation.

Sitting/facingBalcony phone compass 160° → Ren sitting, Bing facing (sits north-by-west, faces south-by-east); built 2015 → Period 8
Flying Star patternPeriod 8, Ren sitting Bing facing: double 8 at the sitting — mountain star 8 and water star 8 both fall in the north (kitchen, entry hall, the side with the two children's rooms). Strong for people and study, weaker for wealth: a chart that "suits settling and suits study". Note that Period 9 began in 2024; the 8 White has gone from prosperous to retreating and the 9 Purple is now in its prime. The house chart is still cast for Period 8 (when it was built), but 8 White is no longer read as "the most prosperous"

3. Ni Haixia's Six Relations layer: who is living in whose position

Master Ni's rule: each person has a home position (Qian the father, Kun the mother, Zhen the eldest son, Xun the eldest daughter). Whichever palace they occupy, the person's trigram is stacked over the palace's trigram to form a hexagram. The readings follow the original text of Tian Ji · Di Mai Dao, rendered for a modern home:

MemberCurrently inHexagram (person over palace)Reading
Husband (Qian)Level-2 southwest master bedroom · KunHeaven over Earth, Pi (Obstruction)Pi is "heaven and earth not meeting": the couple tend to talk past each other, the husband says less and less at home, and work often feels like pushing against a wall. This comes from the position, not the person
Wife (Kun)Level-2 southwest master bedroom · KunKun (Earth)Every matter in the house, big or small, lands on the mother alone; the more capable she is, the more tired; the husband wants to help and cannot find a handle
Son (Zhen)Level-2 northeast · GenThunder over Mountain, Xiao Guo (Small Exceeding)At the desk but the mind will not settle; marks lost to small slips. This is the root of the concentration problem in the Six Relations layer
Daughter (Xun)Level-2 northwest · QianWind over Heaven, Xiao Xu (Small Taming)Independent and strong-willed. No obstacle to study itself; living in the father's position, her voice in the house outweighs her father's

Readings follow the original text of Tian Ji · Di Mai Dao. The original is written for practitioners and is heavily worded; here it is toned down for a modern household, keeping only the direction.

Master Ni's correct positions: husband and wife together in the northwest Qian position — the husband becomes Qian (Heaven), the wife becomes Earth over Heaven, Tai (Peace). That is his standard requirement for a married household. The eldest son in the east becomes Zhen (Thunder) — "at the top of the class"; the eldest daughter in the southeast becomes Xun (Wind) — "certain to pass her exams". In this home the northwest is the daughter's room, the east is the staircase, and the southeast is the level-1 guest room and the level-2 bathroom: not one of the four is in the correct position. The couple's line matters most; the cure is item 7 in section 5.

On swapping the children's rooms: by the Di Mai Dao text, moving the daughter to the northeast gives Wind over Mountain, Jian (Gradual Progress) — "exams do not go smoothly, the last step is missing"; moving the son to the northwest gives Thunder over Heaven, Da Zhuang (Great Power) — "a sign of overstepping the father's position". Both are bad: do not swap. The son stays in the northeast, and Xiao Guo is compensated through the desk and the study position. By Ni, the son in the south becomes Thunder over Fire, Feng (Abundance), "exams go smoothly"; the south side of the level-1 living room is under the 5 Yellow this year, so from next year his daily study spot can move there. This year, use the level-2 family room's centre palace first.

4. The core diagnosis of the two children's concentration

1. Son's room (northeast · Gen): the best study room in the house

  • Flying Stars: mountain star 1 White + water star 6 White = the 1-6 combination, the most classic "literary distinction" pairing in Xuan Kong; in 2026 the annual 4 Green academic star also flies to the northeast; the Eight Mansions Wen Chang sector is the northeast too. Three academic layers stacked in one room.
  • Six Relations: Xiao Guo. His problem is not ability but a mind that will not settle.
  • Current state: the desk you marked is in the room's northwest corner, against the north window and the wardrobe. Sitting facing the window with nothing behind him, attention is most easily pulled outside; his Life Gua's Sheng Qi is in the east, and facing north puts his back to that auspicious direction.

2. Daughter's room (northwest · Qian): the room that most needs a quiet cure this year

  • Flying Stars: mountain star 3 Jade + water star 4 Green — two wood stars in the Qian metal position, metal and wood at war; in 2026 the annual 2 Black illness star flies to the northwest. The 3 Jade governs the people side and brings restlessness, inability to sit still, small disputes; the 2 Black brings low spirits and minor illnesses.
  • Six Relations: Xiao Xu — the daughter in the father's position, independent and assertive. No obstacle to study itself; what gets in the way are this room's stars.
  • Current state: the desk you marked is in the room's northeast corner, against the wall shared with the corridor and the small bathroom.

3. Level-2 family room, centre palace: this year's ready-made "1-4 combination"

Mountain star 4 Green sits in the centre palace, and the 2026 annual 1 White flies in: a 1-4 combination forms. Note that the sofa area by the west window falls in Dui · west, mountain 2 water 5 annual 3 — the 2-5 combination. The long table must not go under the west window; place it toward the middle of the house, on the corridor side.

5. Adjustment plan (by priority)

  1. Turn the son's desk: chair backed against the solid west wall (shared with the corridor), facing east (his Sheng Qi direction). The north window then lights from the left, right for a right-hander. The door is behind him to the left; close it while studying. His personal Wen Chang is in the west, so the bookcase goes on the west wall behind him — books in the academic sector, a mountain of books at his back.
  2. Move the daughter's desk to the west end of the south wall: chair backed against the solid south wall (shared with the family room), the desk at the west-window end, facing north. North is her Fu Wei, the stability direction, and stability is exactly what concentration needs; the west window lights from the left. The door is in the room's southeast corner, so a desk at the west end sits about two metres from it, with the door behind her to the right; close it while studying. Her personal Wen Chang is in the east, so the bookcase goes on the east wall. She leaves the northeast corner and its corridor-and-bathroom wall entirely.
  3. A shared long table in the middle of the family room: on the corridor side of the family room (the centre palace), the two children side by side facing east. Do homework here in the evenings as far as possible, instead of each in their own room. Mother sits alongside reading or working (Kun as Earth: it runs smoothly when she leads). Not in the sofa area by the west window.
  4. Cure for the daughter's room: one bronze bell or a solid copper object (metal controls the 3 Jade wood and drains the 2 Black earth — one object for two stars). Bedding, curtains and decor avoid green, red and yellow; use white, light grey, light blue and metallic tones. No building work in this room this year.
  5. The daughter stays in the northwest room; no move: this home has no bedroom on the south; the southeast guest room carries the house chart's 2-5 combination and should never hold a sleeping child. The northwest room this year has the 3-4 wood stars plus the annual 2 Black, handled by items 2 and 4; in 2027 the annual 1 White flies to the northwest and forms a 1-4 combination with the water star 4 Green, so next year this becomes the best room in the house. Staying is the best choice.
  6. Attic: the centre palace also carries a 1-4 combination. Move the round table from the west side to the attic's centre, slightly east, and make it the weekend long-reading corner, facing east. The northeast terrace corner (mountain 1, water 6, annual 4) is fine for sitting; the southwest terrace corner (mountain 7, water 9, annual 7) and the west side (2-5) are not for long stays.
  7. Cure for the master bedroom (southwest · Kun): in Flying Star terms this room is mountain 7, water 9, annual 7; the 7 Red governs quarrels, so one copper object and no red bedding is enough. What actually needs solving is the Six Relations layer: Pi and Kun. In Master Ni's system these two hexagrams have no object cure; there is one road only: the couple move to the Qian position, the husband becoming Qian (Heaven) and the wife Tai (Peace). Three tiers by feasibility:
    • Cure: move the master bedroom to the northwest section of the attic. The attic is one open floor, large enough and furthest from the level-1 traffic; place the bed in the northwest section and both spouses land in the Qian position at once. The small level-2 northwest room is also Qian, but too small — not recommended. Only three things are needed: insulation, ventilation and night lighting on the stairs. The vacated level-2 southwest room becomes a study or guest room for now; the children's rooms do not move.
    • Partial: if the bed cannot move yet, make the attic's northwest section the couple's living corner — desk, sofa, evening reading and work all there, so both spend real time in the Qian position every day. Master Ni's system is decided by the bed position, so this tier only lightens the reading; it does not resolve it. Said plainly up front.
    • Fallback: the bed stays in the southwest, headboard against the west or south wall, not against the east wall toward the corridor; discuss things that need deciding in the attic as far as possible. One of Master Ni's prohibitions in passing: the kitchen falls in the northwest Qian position, "a stove in the northwest harms the father". The whole kitchen cannot move; what can be done is to keep the hob out of the northwest corner, moving it to the east end of the kitchen's north wall; run the extractor often, keep the hob dry.
  8. Level-1 dining room (west · Dui): mountain 2, water 5, the 2-5 combination — the worst cell on level 1. One copper or metal object on the dining table; avoid yellow and earth tones in the dining room; do not use the dining table as a homework desk.
  9. Level-1 guest room (southeast · Xun): mountain 5, water 2, annual 9 — 2-5 again. Occasional guests are fine; the children should not nap or do homework in this room; no building work this year.
  10. Level-1 spiral staircase (east · Zhen): the stair is in the middle of the house's east side, mountain 6, water 1, annual 8; it does not clash with the entrance door. East is the eldest son's home position, and the staircase occupies it — meaning the son has no "corner of his own" on level 1, which fits putting his study position on level 2. The stair itself needs nothing; keep it bright and clear.
  11. South side of the level-1 living room (Li): 2026 5 Yellow + Tai Sui Wu. Keep the south-window area quiet — no construction, no red decorations.

Method note: the sitting/facing follows the on-site compass; two readings, from the balcony and from the living-room south window, both gave 160°, which falls in Bing (157.5°–172.5°). A phone shows true north by default while a luopan uses magnetic north; Shanghai's declination is about 5.5° west, so the luopan reading is about 165°, closer to the middle of Bing — the sitting/facing is settled. The nine palaces are divided on the axis of the house's sitting/facing line; the grid laid over the floor plan is an approximation of those sectors. The Six Relations hexagrams follow the "person over palace" method from Ni Haixia's Tian Ji feng shui lectures; the readings have been softened for a modern household and are not verdicts of fortune or misfortune.

8. Turning judgement into something verifiable: the ten-day observation sheet

The effect of a feng shui adjustment is not judged by feel but by record. Follow the order below, one change at a time:

PhaseWhat to doWhat to record
Days 1–3Desks and beds untouched, everything as usualDaily homework start time, number of obvious lapses and their cause, amount completed, the child's own comfort rating (1–5)
Days 4–10Only items 1 and 2 of section 5: swap the two desks' positions and orientationsThe same four, plus any discomfort from the door, window or lighting
From day 11Add item 3, the shared long table, as appropriateSame

Record the two children separately and keep conditions such as homework load and sleep as similar as possible. After ten days send us the sheet, and then decide whether the bigger moves — the attic, the master bedroom — are worth doing. Do not judge from one exam result.
