How to Measure a House Facing Direction Without Confusing the Door

Record a home’s facing, distinguish facade and entrance readings, and understand phone-compass interference, north references and sector boundaries.

Facing, sitting and door direction

Facing, sitting and door directionAssume facing south at 180°, sitting north at 0°, and a separate east-facing door at 90°, all on the same north reference. The chosen south facing is a teaching assumption.Sitting N · 0°Facing S · 180°Example homeDoor E · 90° →Chosen facade ↓
Original teaching schematic, not a measured or to-scale plan. Assume facing south at 180°, sitting north at 0°, and a separate east-facing door at 90°, all on the same north reference. The chosen south facing is a teaching assumption.

Decide which surface you are measuring

A building’s main facade, an apartment’s main window and its entrance door may point in different directions. First name the surface and the scale: whole building or individual apartment. In a flat whose entrance opens onto an internal corridor, that door reading need not describe the exterior facade. Traditional methods differ in how they select facing; record the reason for your choice instead of assuming that every home faces through its front door.

Make a measurement note before opening the compass

On the plan, draw an arrow perpendicular to the chosen surface and pointing outwards. Note where you will stand, which side you are looking toward and whether the reading is measured or estimated. Check the facade from a safe, accessible location; stay inside barriers and away from traffic. A nearby road or the brightest window can help describe the setting but is not by itself a universal rule for assigning facing.

Read the phone and repeat from clear positions

Apple instructs iPhone users to hold the device flat and align the central crosshairs. Point the top of the device along the outward arrow. Nearby magnetic objects and environmental interference can affect the result. Move away from a metal door frame or magnetic accessory, keep the same outward orientation, and record several readings at different clear positions. Repetition exposes disagreement; it does not certify survey-grade accuracy.

Keep magnetic north and true north separate

True north and magnetic north are different references. NOAA describes magnetic declination as the angular difference needed to relate them; it depends on location and time. Record the reference your app displays. If you cannot verify it, mark it unknown. Do not assume a map arrow and an app reading use the same reference, apply an arbitrary fixed correction, or correct a reading again when the app already displays true bearings.

Worked examples: facing, sitting and uncertain boundaries

For a declared facing F, the opposite sitting bearing is (F + 180°) modulo 360°. This is geometry, not proof that the chosen facade is the correct traditional reference. In an eight-direction convention, south is centered on 180° and begins at 157.5°. Use the examples to understand the inputs, not as a tolerance standard for your phone.

Worked examples: facing, sitting and uncertain boundaries
Observed or assumed inputWhat can be recordedWhat not to conclude
Facing 180° on a stated north referenceFacing south; sitting 0° northThat the entrance door must face south
Repeated 178°, 180°, 182°A narrow cluster around south, subject to device errorThat 180° is independently verified
Readings 156° and 159°The readings straddle the SE/S boundary at 157.5°A definite sector after rounding
Readings 359°, 0°, 1°A cluster around north across the wraparoundAn ordinary arithmetic mean near 120°

When the readings disagree

Do not average measurements from different walls, different north references or different directions of view. Recheck the chosen surface, remove nearby interference and repeat. If results still cross a sector boundary, preserve the range and mark the orientation uncertain. A more detailed 24-mountain chart is more sensitive to a small angular change than an eight-direction description; entering a decimal does not make the underlying observation more accurate.

Pass the context into the report

The report intake distinguishes the building facade from a compass reading taken outward at the main window or balcony, and includes a north-reference field. Supply those as separate observations when they differ. Keep your plan arrow and measurement notes available for review. Satellite imagery can help identify the building and its surroundings, but a remote estimate should not be presented as an on-site compass measurement.

FAQ

Can I measure through a closed metal door?

The result may be distorted. Use a safe clear position, retain the same chosen outward orientation and compare readings away from nearby metal or magnets.

Can I use a phone instead of a luopan?

A phone can help record a provisional bearing, but Apple warns against relying on its compass for precise direction. Device quality and interference matter; a phone reading alone does not validate a traditional assessment.

Should I enter a rounded compass value?

Keep the observed value and its north reference. If readings cross a relevant boundary, report uncertainty rather than rounding into a preferred sector.

Is sitting simply the side where I sit indoors?

No. In the convention used here, sitting is the opposite direction to the declared facing, regardless of where a person or chair is located.
