Personal Kua vs House Gua: Two Different Eight Mansions Layers

Separate a person’s Life Gua from a home’s sitting-based House Gua, with an eight-house reference and a worked example.

Original teaching schematic, not a measured or to-scale plan. A female born on 15 June 1985 has Personal Kua 9, Li. An assumed south-facing, north-sitting home is House Gua 1, Kan, using sitting direction. Both are East group but remain different guas.

One classification belongs to the person, the other to the home

Personal Kua, or Life Gua, uses a birth-year convention and the sex category required by the traditional formula. House Gua classifies the dwelling using its orientation. A person moving to another home keeps the same birth inputs, while the new dwelling may have a different House Gua. These labels describe two parts of a traditional model; neither measures a resident’s wellbeing or a building’s safety.

Write down the House Gua convention

This article uses the sitting-direction convention described in Joey Yap’s teaching: determine the chosen facing, take its opposite as sitting, then identify the sitting trigram. A facing of 180° gives sitting at 0°, north, and therefore a Kan house in this convention. Do not use the facing sector itself to name the house while quoting a sitting-based table. Also state whether you are assessing a whole building or one apartment.

Eight houses by sitting direction

The table below follows that convention. It is a label lookup after orientation has been established, not a way to discover the orientation. The numbers name trigrams; 5 is not a ninth compass direction. East and West groups are traditional group names rather than a ranking of homes.

Worked example: a Li person and a Kan house

Using the site’s Life Gua formula, a female born on 15 June 1985 has personal Gua 9, Li, in the East group. Assume that her dwelling has an established south facing at 180° on a stated north reference. Its sitting is north, giving House Gua 1, Kan, also in the East group. The two numbers remain 9 and 1: sharing a group does not make them the same chart or prove that every room is suitable.

A room’s location is not the direction a person faces

Suppose a desk stands in the west part of the plan while its user looks east. “West” describes the desk’s location relative to the plan’s center; “east” describes the user’s orientation. Record both. Do not copy a personal preferred-direction list into every room-sector label. A combined interpretation needs to say which layer each label came from, especially when room placement and a person’s orientation point in different directions.

What if the residents belong to different groups?

Calculate each person’s result separately and retain the actual room constraints. Do not change one birth year to force agreement or label the dwelling unusable because two people differ. Compare practical arrangements that preserve comfortable access, sleep conditions and shared use. Traditional compatibility language does not establish a need to move home, undertake renovations or buy an object.

Where the calculator stops

Use the free Eight Mansions tool to explore personal Kua and its direction labels. A birth-only result does not establish House Gua or a measured floor-plan overlay. A full property report needs its own orientation inputs; Flying Stars adds a separate time-based layer. For a birth close to Li Chun, check the year-boundary assumptions before trusting a personal number; the mid-year example above avoids that ambiguity.

FAQ

Do Personal Kua and House Gua have to be the same number?

No. They describe different inputs. Even traditional group agreement does not mean identical charts or validate a real-world outcome.

Does House Gua change every year?

Not merely because the calendar year changes in this sitting-based convention. Annual Flying Stars is another layer. A changed orientation assumption can change the assigned House Gua.

Why do two sites give a different House Gua?

First compare sitting versus facing conventions, building versus apartment scope, north reference and any boundary uncertainty. A disagreement in inputs can precede any difference in interpretation.

Does moving the bed change my Kua?

No. It changes furniture position or orientation, not the birth information used for Personal Kua or the declared sitting direction used for House Gua.
